SHAPING THE FUTURE OF CONNECTIVITY THROUGH COMMUNITY CENTERED CONNECTIVITY

In a remarkable display of collaboration and vision, community networks from across Kenya gathered in Naivasha to chart the course for a National Strategy for Community Networks. The event was a convergence of ideas, passion, and action, spearheaded by AFRALTI and Tanda Community Network, with invaluable support from the Association for Progressive Communications (APC), Rhizomatica, and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).

The workshop focused on the growth and development of Community-Centered Connectivity (CCC)—a transformative approach to bridging the digital divide. By putting the power of connectivity in the hands of local communities, CCC empowers underserved and unserved groups to access reliable, locally-driven Internet services that align with their unique needs.

At the heart of these efforts are digital champions, the unsung heroes who mobilize their communities to build, own, and operate network infrastructures. Their work not only provides access to connectivity but also catalyses socio-economic transformation in some of the most remote areas of Kenya.

The Naivasha meeting was pivotal in shaping a strategy that will support the sustainable growth of community networks across Kenya. The focus group discussions included; Infrastructure & Connectivity, Capacity Building, Inclusion & Gender Integration, Digital Services, Innovation & Collaboration, Regulatory & Policy Considerations and Funding & Sustainability.

The outcomes of the workshop will have a lasting impact, paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable digital future in Kenya. As the strategy takes shape, it will serve as a blueprint for other countries in the region to follow, demonstrating the power of locally-driven solutions to global challenges.
