Community Networks in Kenya are rapidly expanding to address various gaps in underserved communities, such as the lack of internet connectivity, unaffordable access, lack of locally relevant content, insufficient community engagement, and the integration of cultural norms. Most community networks in Kenya utilize license-exempt 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi spectrum bands due to their low cost and availability. However, Wi-Fi faces significant challenges like signal interference, congestion, and reduced reliability, especially in densely populated areas. Wi-Fi networks also struggle with scalability and require frequent maintenance. In contrast, fiber optic networks offer superior data capacity, stability, reliability, and scalability, making them an advantageous alternative for community networks serving unserved and underserved areas.
Fellowship Description
This comprehensive fellowship program combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills, focusing on the unique needs and challenges of community networks. The fellowship comprises 3 phases:
Phase 1: Fellows will participate in an intensive foundational training course on fiber deployment offered at the African Advanced Level Telecommunications Institute (AFRALTI) in Nairobi, Kenya from 6 to 12 of October, 2024. This training will cover both theoretical knowledge and hands-on activities and will conclude with a final test by the Fiber Optic Association (FOA). The course will also introduce the fellows to industry standards governing outside plant and premises fiber networks. Fellows will engage in interactive workshops, hands-on sessions, and field visits to learn how to effectively plan, deploy, and manage fiber optic networks in community contexts.
Phase 2: Fellows will undergo an industry practicum with technology companies and internet service providers to gain practical insights and real-world applications of fiber optic network installation, maintenance, and management.
Phase 3: Fellows will receive expert mentorship and guidance to develop a comprehensive techno-feasibility study, which will serve as a detailed roadmap for resource mobilisation towards their fiber deployment project.
The Community-Centric Approaches to Planning, Design, and Deployment of Fiber Infrastructure in Kenya fellowship is a fully funded program. The fellows will receive comprehensive support which includes course fees, travel expenses to and from the program venue, accommodation and meals.
